How to Drain an Algae-Covered Pool

Regardless of their specific size, typical swimming pools are guaranteed to carry thousands of gallons of water. Occasionally you will need to drain your swimming pool when an algae infestation is beyond cleaning. The pool can take days to drain, depending on the size. If you don't have a water drain is your yard, it can take even longer, because you will have to perform the draining in increments to avoid flooding your yard. Patience is required for what is a relatively straightforward process.

Instructions

  1. Above-ground Pools

    • 1

Drop one end of a garden hose into the pool as close to the bottom as possible. If the pool ladder is still installed, wrap the hose around the ladder to hold it in place.

    • 2

Attach the other end of the hose to your yard's water supply. You will be siphoning the water from the swimming pool. Be sure to use a garden hose that's long enough to reach from the pool to the water supply and then to an available drain in your yard.

    • 3

Turn on the water, and let it run from the water supply and into the pool for about two minutes. Disconnect the hose from the water supply before turning the water off. Kink the hose near the supply and then disconnect it. The water will back-flow out of the hose to start the siphoning process.

    • 4

Point the hose to your yard's closest drain to avoid flooding. If you do not have a drain, then you will have to move the hose around the pool every few minutes to disperse the water and avoid puddling or flooding. Repeat the process as necessary if the siphon stops.

    In-ground Pools

    • 5

Connect a garden hose to your submersible pump. All submersible pumps come with an attachment to add a hose of any length necessary.

    • 6

Plug the submersible pump into the nearest power supply. Turn on the pump and immediately drop it into the water. It's made to be submerged in water and pump it out through the garden hose.

    • 7

Lead the garden hose to your nearest drain. Pump the pool in increments if the drain is slow and becomes backed up. The submersible pump can be used for both above-ground and in-ground pools.
