How to Drain a Pool Correctly

Draining a swimming pool is something that most pool owners dread due to the time and money associated with doing it. You may need to drain the pool because you're removing it from the yard or because there's a crack. Draining may be necessary for any number of reasons, and doing it correctly can speed up the process and eliminate a lot of headaches. Swimming pools can be drained with a submersible pump. The motor size of the pump will determine how fast the pool is drained. Pumps can be purchased or rented at many home improvement stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect a hose to the submersible pump. Larger submersible pumps will utilize a 1.5-inch standard pool hose, while other smaller pumps may simply require a standard garden hose.

    • 2

If necessary, connect a grounded extension cord to the end of the pump's cord. Plug it into the nearest power supply. Do not turn the pump on. The pump needs to operate with water or it will become damaged.

Turn the pump on with the switch located on the pump itself. Immediately drop it into the pool water. Lead the hose to your yard's nearest drain to avoid flooding.
