How to Drain an In-Ground Pool Cheaply

Depending on the size of your in-ground swimming pool and whether or not you pay a sewage and water use bill in your municipality, draining a pool may never be cheap. There is no way around this. Water bills aside, however, the best way to drain your in-ground pool is by using the built-in draining system that is assembled with nearly every in-ground concrete and plaster pool. If you do not have a draining system built into your filter system, renting or buying a submersible pump is the cheapest way to remove the water.

Turn off your pool filter. If necessary, connect a grounded electrical extension cord to the power cord of the submersible pump. Use an extension cord only if the submersible pump cord is not long enough to reach a power outlet from the pool.

Attach a hose to the submersible pump. The hose has to be long enough to reach the backyard or sewer drain to avoid flooding. Larger, commercial-sized submersible pumps use a 1.5-inch hose, the same size as most pool hoses used on your filter. Smaller pumps require the same fitting as a standard garden hose.

Plug the pump into the power outlet. Run the draining hose from the pump to the nearest yard or sewer drain. Turn on the pump, and drop it into the pool. The amount of time it takes to drain will depend on the pump size.
