Run the pool filter during the day when the pool is being used. The pool chemicals need to mix and circulate through the water as bathers are using the pool. When the pump cycles during the day, it removes debris from the pool through the skimmer and media filler. If the pump isn't running, the debris could sink to the bottom of the pool, which will eventually affect the clarity of the water.
The general rule for running a pool pump is between six and eight hours. However, the amount of time that you cycle the water depends on the water clarity. Some people run the filter for short cycles so the water stays clear and clean. For example, you can run the pump during the day when the pool is used and then run it again at night for three to four hours to keep the water clear.
According to the Consumer Energy Center, you can experiment with the length of time to cycle the water and save money on your energy bills. Run the pump for three to four hours once a day during the daytime for one or two days. If the water looks hazy, add to the time by one hour. Continue adding an hour until you have crystal clear water in the pool all the time.
Use a pool cover during the night when the pool is not being used. This cuts down on the debris that gets into the pool at night. This, combined with running the pool filter during the day only, will help keep the pool water clean and clear. During the day when the pool is not being used, keep the cover on it to aid in keeping the water clean.
