How to Cover the Main Drain on a Pool

Pool maintenance can be a tedious part of an otherwise fun pastime, but with the proper procedure, changing parts should only take an afternoon at best. The main drain of a pool has a powerful suction, because it is responsible for the circulation and filtering of water. This suction also presents a possible danger, if the cover becomes damaged or is not attached properly. People or children can become trapped or injured due to faulty covers. Complying with state regulations or manufacturing suggestions will ensure that you and your guests can enjoy your pool without fear.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a drain cover if you do not already have one and check your state’s guidelines to make sure that it passes the qualifications. Call the drain cover company if you cannot find the information or have questions.

    • 2

Drain the pool, if this has not been done already. To drain, turn off any equipment, then close the skimmer valve so the main drain is open and select the option to drain the pool.

    • 3

Turn the drain off and make sure the suction pump has been turned off when you go down to work on the drain. Do not use anything electrical or requiring a plug when standing on the pool floor.

    • 4

Check the pool drain filter for any obstructions or abnormalities, then place the drain cover over the hole and carefully screw it in with a screwdriver or any other tool specified in the pool manual. Follow any additional instructions provided by the manufacturer.
