Home Remedies to Lower Chlorine Levels in Pools

Chlorine is a common sanitizing agent used in swimming pools. This chemical oxidizes algae and kills germs and bacteria in the pool water so that swimmers will not be at risk of infections. Ideally, the chlorine level in your pool should test between 1.0 and 3.0 parts per million, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. But, sometimes, the level climbs higher than you intended because you added too much of the chemical or made some other miscalculation. Luckily, there are some simple things you can try at home to reduce the chlorine level in your pool.
  1. Wait it Out

    • The easiest way to get a lower chlorine reading in your pool is to do nothing. Simply wait it out. Pool water loses chlorine at a fairly fast pace, which is why you are always needing to add more on a regular basis during the summer. Time in the sun will drain pool water of chlorine and within about two days -- sometimes within a single day if it is particularly sunny -- you can see the chlorine content drop dramatically.

    Drain and Fill

    • If you don’t want to wait on the chlorine level in your swimming pool to come down naturally, you can always try water replacement to eliminate the issue. Simply turn your pump onto a backwash cycle and flush out a good portion of the over-chlorinated water. Add fresh water to the pool to refill it and you’ll find that the chlorine level will drop considerably. Depending on the size of your pool, this could take some time, but you should be able to get the level close to where you want it within a few hours.

    Try Peroxide

    • One way to lower chlorine levels in your pool is to add other chemicals. While most of these de-chlorination chemicals are available at pool supply stores, there is one additive that will work to reduce chlorine that can be found in most homes. Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical that will remove chlorine from water and will also sanitize on its own.

    Increase Use

    • If your pool’s chlorine level is not too high and you can be in the water without the chlorine irritating your eyes or skin, then you can simply swim in the pool to reduce chlorine. The more use your pool gets, the more quickly the chlorine level will fall. A few people swimming in the pool for a day may be enough to lower your chlorine level a small amount and make the reading on your test kit return to the ideal range.
