The Maintenance of a Swimming Pool's Check Valve

The check valve is an integral part of the filtration system of your swimming pool, but it cannot run properly without the right maintenance. In a properly maintained pool, the water is constantly filtered, cleaned and run back into the swimming pool. Checking this valve on a regular basis and maintaining it properly is the best way to keep your pool running trouble free.
  1. Clean the Pool

    • The filter in your swimming pool does the majority of the cleaning, but that does not mean the pool owner has nothing to do. The filtration system and the check valve can handle small pieces of dirt and debris, but larger things such as hair and threads from swimsuits are collected in a basket near the filter. Checking and emptying that basket is a big part of maintaining the pool, and this is something that should be done every day while the pool is operating. Empty the basket, wash it thoroughly and return it to its position inside the pool.

    Monitor the Check Valve

    • Most modern swimming pools have check valves that are clearly visible to the pool owner. Watch the check valve as it operates. You should be able to clearly see the check valve opening and closing as the water is filtered through the pool. If you cannot see the check valve clearly, remove the check valve cover and press the valve with your finger. The check valve should feel soft and pliable. Lubricate the check valve if it feels stiff or does not move freely.

    Safety First

    • No matter how small the job, you should always cut the power to your swimming pool before performing any type of maintenance. If you determine that the check valve needs to be lubricated, you first need to shut down the power to the pool. After the power is off, you can work safely on the check valve.

    Lubricate the Valve

    • The check valve should be lubricated any time it feels stiff, or whenever it is not operating as it should. To lubricate the check valve, first find the O-ring in check valve. Apply the lubricant to the O-ring to keep it soft and supple. Use only lubricants designed specifically for swimming pool check valves. You can find these lubricants at your local pool supply store.
