How to Install the Gasket for Pool Lights

Pool lights provide illumination in and around the pool area, allowing for unobstructed views into the depths of the water. They have a water-tight construction that prevents water from seeping into the electrical components, primarily using a round, rubber ring called a gasket. When you replace a burned-out pool light, you disassemble the fixture and remove the gasket. Re-installing the gasket properly is critical to both the life of the light and the safety of the pool.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off all power to the pool at the main control box for the pool equipment.

    • 2

Sit down on the side of the pool just above the light. Lean over the pool wall, and locate the screw in the very top of the light housing. Remove the screw by turning it counterclockwise with a screwdriver.

    • 3

Slide the screwdriver or the tip of a knife under the rim of the light fixture to pry it up slightly. Then grasp it with your fingers, and remove it the remainder of the way from the pool wall. Set the light on top of the pool deck, so you can work on it more easily.

    • 4

Look at the front of the light to determine if the glass cover is attached with screws or clamps. If there are clamps, simply push them up or down to release them, and if there are screws, remove them using the screwdriver. Set the glass cover and the screws, if applicable, in a safe location.

    • 5

Pull out the round rubber gasket, which is found around the inside rim of the light, if one is already installed. Insert a new, identical gasket in its place.

    • 6

Place the glass cover back on the light, and reattach the clamps or reinsert the screws.

    • 7

Coil up the wire behind the light, and push it and the light back into the hole in the pool wall until it is flush with it.

    • 8

Reinsert the screw at the top of the light, and turn the power back on at the pool’s main control panel.
