How to Put Together a DE Swimming Pool Filter Step-by-Step

DE filters, more formally known as diatomaceous earth filters, are capable of trapping dirt and debris as small as 2 microns. The DE powder lines the filter grids inside the filter housing, and they work in conjunction to trap the dirt and debris. A DE filter is set up in a pool the same way as other filters. A few basic pool supplies are needed to complete the job.

Place the filter housing and pump basket in their respective locations on the filter base. Many times this is pre-assembled as a single component. If it isn't, connect the motor with the supplied screws to the base of the filter. The filter itself connects to the pool motor attachment. Line this connector with PVC tape and screw together tightly.

Attach a 3-foot pool hose from the bottom of the pool skimmer to the pool pump basket. Secure each hose with a hose clamp to prevent leaks. Tighten the clamps with the screwdriver.

Attach another pool hose from the top of the DE filter to the return jet. Secure the end of these hoses with clamps as well.

    • 4

Turn the filter's multi-port valve to the "filter" setting. Plug in the filter to the yard's power supply. If you are using an extension cord, make sure it's grounded and that the joint between the power cord and the extension cord is wrapped in electrical tape for extra protection.

Pre-coat the filter with DE powder. Refer to your instruction manual or face of the filter for DE powder doses. This can vary greatly depending on filter size, which is why it usually is printed on the face of the filter for quick reference.
