Troubleshooting a Hot Tub's GFCI Circuit Breaker

A hot tub relies on many internal components in order to function. However, if your hot tub won't turn on at all, there probably is a problem with the circuit breaker. The actual breaker for your hot tub is GFCI-protected. GFCI is a breaker that fits in your home panel and protects circuits where water and electricity come into contact. You can troubleshoot your spa by accessing this breaker.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the breaker panel to your home, and open the panel door.

    • 2

Locate the circuit marked "GFCI." This is the hot tub breaker.

    • 3

Check to make sure no other circuits are on the same breaker as the hot tub. If there are, that could trip the hot tub breaker, which could be the reason the hot tub won't turn on.

    • 4

Turn the breaker switch to the "Off" position, and then flip it back to the "On" position. This resets the unit. Try powering on the hot tub again. If this doesn't work, proceed to the next step.

    • 5

Flip the main breaker switch in the panel to the "Off" position to shut off all power.

    • 6

Remove the screws on the metal cover over the breaker panel, and remove the cover. You now have full access to the breakers.

    • 7

Check the rear of the breaker to ensure that both circuit wires, the red and black, are plugged securely into the bus ports at the back of the breaker. If the wires aren't plugged in, you can plug them into the ports.

    • 8

Replace the breaker cover and screws. You can now turn the power back on.
