How to Test My Ozonator in My Hot Tub

Hot tubs appear simple to own and operate, but maintaining these backyard accessories requires more than checking water levels. Monitoring chemical levels can prevent bacterial growth and harm to the spa's users. One of the primary methods of keeping contaminants is using an ozonator. Hot tub manufacturers install these ozone generators to push concentrated in oxygen into the spa water. Ozone naturally neutralizes bacteria, virus and algae, reducing the need for harmful chemicals to stabilize the water. The best way to test an ozonator is to use a spa test kit, which uses strips that change color to indicate chemical and bacteria levels.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn your hot tub jets on high, and allow the water to circulate for two to three minutes. Tip a drinking glass or cup into the water, and fill it with approximately 3 to 4 ounces.

    • 2

Dip a spa test strip that measures bacteria and algae into the glass, and remove the strip. You want the test strip to just get wet. Shake the strip to remove any excess water, then hold it facing up for 15 seconds.

    • 3

Compare the colors on the test strip with the key, usually found on the test strip container, to measure the water contaminant level. If the bacteria and algae levels are low, your ozone generator works. If they come back high, you will need to replace your ozone cell.
