Hot Tub Projects

Whether you have aches and pains that need soothing or just want to relax at the end of a stressful day, a hot tub can be an ideal addition to your backyard. However, to get the most out of your tub, it often helps to build or add accessories that make lounging in it more enjoyable. You can choose from several different do-it-yourself projects that can enhance your hot tub, so you can find an option that meets your needs and skill level.
  1. Gazebo

    • Whether you want privacy, shade or an enclosure that allows for year-round use, building a gazebo around your hot tub can be an ideal project for enhancing the tub. You can design and build your gazebo yourself or purchase a kit that provides the necessary supplies and instructions for assembling the structure. An open gazebo provides protection from the sun, rain and other elements but still allows the breeze around the tub. A fully enclosed design is ideal if you plan to add a heater and use your hot tub even when the temperatures start to drop. A gazebo works well for a hot tub that is part of a deck because you can incorporate it into the deck’s design, but you can also use a gazebo to surround a freestanding hot tub that is located at a distance from your home.

    Pergola

    • If you simply want to shade your hot tub, adding a pergola may be an ideal weekend project. A pergola is a typically made of wood or vinyl and consists of several vertical posts and horizontal crossbeams that form the roof. As with a gazebo, you can design your own pergola or purchase a kit with assembly directions. To provide greater shade, you can grow vines, roses or other plants across the top beams. You can also hang lights from the pergola’s crossbeams so that you can use your hot tub after dark. If you want greater privacy for your tub, you can also add privacy panels to your pergola.

    Hedge Screen

    • Planting a hedge screen may be an effective project if you’re concerned about privacy for your hot tub but want to maintain a natural look for your yard. Tall hedges can easily block the view from of your tub from neighbors’ yards, so you don’t have to feel self-conscious when enjoying your hot tub. Evergreen hedges are the best option for a privacy screen because they retain their leaves year-round. However, you can mix several types of hedges to create a more textured, dimensional look.

    Walkway

    • If your hot tub is set away from your deck or patio, you may have to walk across grassy or muddy areas to reach it. As a result, you may run the risk of tracking dirt, leaves and other debris into the tub or your home after your soak. Creating a paved walkway from your home to the hot tub makes it easier to get to the tub and keep your feet clean as you walk. You can build your walkway from a variety of materials, including concrete, brick, pavers or natural stone. For a formal look, create a straight, defined path. However, if you prefer a more casual style path, build a winding, curved path to your hot tub.
