How to Lift a Hot Tub

The massive weight of a hot tub means lifting it is not a one-, two-, or even three-person job. Depending on the size and weight of the tub, it may require two people on each edge. But usually only one end needs to be lifted, especially if you are moving the tub, so you shouldn't need more than four people to handle the job. Once the tub is on its side, simply heft it on top of a couple of dollies and roll it away.

Things You'll Need

  • Wet/dry vacuum
  • Towel
  • Appliance dollies, two
  • Plywood sheets

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the tub's electrical connections and unplug the power cord. Wrap and secure all cords together.

    • 2

Drain the tub, following the directions provided by the manufacturer. Suction out any remaining water, including from the plumbing lines and jets, with a wet/dry vacuum. Wipe the inside of the tub dry with a towel.

    • 3

Position one to two people on both edges of one side.

    • 4

Lift up both edges and place the tub on its side.

    • 5

Place the hot tub on top of two appliance dollies -- one in the front and one in the back -- to move the hot tub. Lay down plywood sheets along your path to make for a smoother ride.
