How to Replace a Hot Tub Motor

Without the soothing jets and bubbling water, a hot tub would just be a tub full of hot water. If the motor in your hot tub fails, that’s exactly what you’ll have. Having a defective pump motor replaced by a professional can cost hundreds of dollars. However, thanks to the two-part design of hot tub pumps, you can easily replace a hot tub motor yourself without draining the tub or removing the pump. You’ll enjoy relaxing in your hot tub even more, knowing that you saved some money and did the repair yourself.

Turn off the power to the hot tub at the main breaker and the sub-panel. Remove the access panel from the side of your hot tub. Refer to your owner’s manual for instructions on how to remove the panel.

    • 2

Locate the bolts or screws that hold the motor to the pump assembly. The screws or bolts may go through the pump into the motor housing, or they may extend through the motor housing into the pump. Use a screwdriver or socket wrench to loosen and remove the screws or bolts once you locate them.

Use a screwdriver or socket wrench to remove the bolts or screws that secure the motor housing to the hot tub deck. There should be four screws or bolts through the bottom of the motor housing.

Loosen the ground screw on the body of the motor with a flat head screwdriver and remove the ground wire. Slide the motor away from the pump assembly until the motor shaft clears the pump. Pull the motor out of the hot tub body to access the wiring panel.

Remove the cover from the wiring panel with a Phillips or flat head screwdriver. Note the location of the wires inside the panel. Loosen the terminal screws with a Phillips head screwdriver and pull the wires free. Loosen the cable clamp on the motor housing with a flat head screwdriver and pull the wires out of the motor.

Slide the wires through the cable clamp on the replacement motor. Connect the wires to the correct terminals inside the wiring panel and tighten the terminal screws. Tighten the cable clamp to hold the wire in place. Place the cover on the wiring panel and secure it with the retaining screw.

Place the motor inside the hot tub. Slide the shaft into the pump assembly. You may need to turn the motor by hand until the shaft aligns with the pump impeller. Once the motor and pump are aligned, the motor will sit flush against the pump assembly.

Hold the motor firmly against the pump housing while installing and tightening the screws or bolts that hold the motor to the hot tub deck. Install and tighten the bolts or screws that hold the motor to the pump assembly. Wrap the ground wire around the green screw on the body of the motor and tighten the screw securely.
