Hayward Side Wall Skimmer Installation

Replacing or installing a Hayward skimmer is a straightforward procedure. The skimmer suctions water, along with dirt, debris and other floating contaminants, and passes it through the pump. The debris is trapped and prevented from flowing back into the swimming pool. Hayward skimmer kits include installation instructions and hardware, making the installation process simple. Install the skimmer in a spot on the pool wall that is easily accessible for plumbing or electricity repairs.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the spot on the pool where you want to install the Hayward skimmer, typically eight inches from the rim. Drain the water from the swimming pool until it falls two inches below the desired installation point.

    • 2

Place the traceable skimmer template included with the skimmer kit on the desired spot on the wall and trace its opening and screw holes with a wax pencil.

    • 3

Cut along the outline of the skimmer’s opening with a jigsaw. Maintain steady pressure and work slowly so you cut along the vinyl pool lining and metal pool wall.

    • 4

Position the tip of a power drill over the template for a screw hole. Drill a pilot hole through the pool liner and wall. Repeat this process to drill holes over the marked spots for screw holes.

    • 5

Insert temporary screws in the holes to hold the liner up and keep it from sliding down due to the weight of the water in the pool. These screws are included in the skimmer kit.

    • 6

Position the rubber seal included in the skimmer kit over the outer wall of the swimming pool with its holes lined up against the pilot holes on the wall. Set the skimmer on the seal with its holes aligned with the holes in the seal and those through the wall. The rubber seal acts as a protective barrier that prevents water from seeping through.

    • 7

Unscrew the place-holding screws in turn, and replace with the screws provided for securing the skimmer assembly. Insert these screws from the inner edge of the pool, so they penetrate the vinyl lining, metal wall and into the Hayward skimmer.

    • 8

Install the skimmer’s faceplate from inside the swimming pool. Insert the screws through the faceplate, the liner, pool wall and the skimmer. Seal the gap between the faceplate and skimmer with epoxy.

    • 9

Add water to the pool until halfway up the Hayward skimmer’s faceplate.
