How to Strip the Pool

Painting your pool will give it a fresh, clean look. However, if you continue to apply paint to the surface without first removing the previous coats, the layers upon layers of paint will begin to pull away from the surface. To prevent the pool paint from cracking or peeling, strip the paint from the surface. Before you can remove the paint, you must first drain the pool of the water. For more information on the proper draining technique for your specific pool, refer to the owner’s manual.

Instructions

    • 1

Protect your hands with a pair of chemical resistant rubber gloves. Open the pool paint stripper can and carefully pour the solution into a metal paint tray.

    • 2

Dip a dry, clean paintbrush into the paint stripper. Brush the pool paint stripper on the unwanted paint. Work in sections of about 10 square feet and continue applying the stripper until the area is completely covered with a light coating.

    • 3

Allow the paint to soften for about 15 minutes. Scrape the paint softened by the paint stripper off the surface with a paint scraper. Discard the removed paint into a pile for future cleanup, using a shovel.

    • 4

Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you've stripped the entire pool of paint. Wash the surface with a mixture of 2 gallons of water and 1/2 cup of trisodium phosphate before repainting or filling the pool with water.
