How to Open an In-Ground Hot Tub

Winterize an in-ground hot tub at the end of the season to prevent frozen pipes and other damage if you won't use the spa year-round. When spring comes, you will need to open the hot tub, but it will take some preparation work. The tub should be clean, repaired, if necessary, and the water clean and clear so it's ready for soaking in.

Instructions

    • 1

      Remove the hot tub cover.

    • 2

Inspect all parts of the hot tub, including the shell, pump and all pipes. Look for cracks or other damage. Replace any parts, if needed, before proceeding with opening the hot tub.

    • 3

Clean the inside of the spa and the pillows with a soft cloth and a solution of water and a non-sudsing cleaner or baking soda. Rinse the tub well to remove all of the residue.

    • 4

Remove the filter from its housing. Hose it down to remove any dirt or debris. Use a spa filter cleaner to remove tough residue. Re-install the filter.

    • 5

Wax the hot tub shell with a polish formulated for acrylic spa surfaces. Buff the shell with an old T-shirt until it shines.

    • 6

Rinse off the hot tub cover. Clean the cover with a non-sudsing cleaner or baking soda, combined with water to remove dirt and grime. Apply a spa cover protectant to the cover to prolong its life.

    • 7

Place a water hose inside of the hot tub. Fill the tub slowly. Watch for leaks. If a leak is discovered, drain the tub and have it repaired before using the hot tub.

    • 8

Test the controls once the hot tub is full. Verify the jets, heaters and all other controls work correctly.

    • 9

Apply water chemicals as necessary. Take a water sample to the hot tub dealer for an analysis or use testing strips. Add the appropriate chemicals to sanitize and adjust the pH of the water.
