How to Make My Own Solar Pool Panels From Bubble Wrap

Using bubble wrap as an alternative to a solar pool cover typically will not last as long as commercial solar pool covers, and it may not trap heat as efficiently. Commercial solar pool covers are made from a heavy bubble wrap type vinyl and coated with a UV coating, which provides a durable and long-lasting way to heat your pool’s water. However, bubble wrap will work in a pinch, even if the material degrades faster.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and length of the pool with a tape measure. Write this measurement on a piece of paper for future reference.

    • 2

Gather the sheets of bubble wrap together so you have enough material to cover the entire length and width of the pool. Add a few extra inches to the width and height measurements, as the panels may overlap slightly where the magnets hold them together. Lay the pieces of bubble wrap out flat with the bubbled surface facing down.

    • 3

Place a dollop of waterproof craft glue on a magnet. Place the magnet glue side down on the edge of the sheet of bubble wrap and apply light pressure with your fingertips. Attach a magnet every 3 to 6 inches along the edge of the bubble wrap.

Continue attaching magnets around the edges of each sheet of bubble wrap with the waterproof glue. The magnets will help connect the sheets of bubble wrap together to provide better coverage over the surface of the water.

Let the glue dry for 24 hours. Assemble the bubble wrap sheets into panels, using the magnets to hold the sheets together, and place the homemade bubble wrap solar cover in your pool.
