Can I Put a Pool on My Deck?

Setting an above-ground pool directly on a deck or recessing it into the decking both present some issues in terms of properly supporting the pool. When installing a pool or building a deck, the materials, structures and placement must adhere to code regulations. It's always ideal to enlist the help of contractors experienced with pool and deck installation.
  1. Benefits

    • If the deck surrounds the pool, it offers swimmers easier access, while giving the pool an in-ground appearance. Because most decks connect directly to the home, the pool is located within just a few feet of the house. A deck creates space to gather and entertain or sunbathe. If the deck is wrapped around the pool, a pool ladder is not needed to climb in and out of the water.

    Weight

    • Depending on the size of the pool, the filled weight may exceed 1,000 pounds. If the pool is placed on top of the deck, the weight of the pool, including the additional weight of occupants, can't exceed the deck's load capacity. It's advisable to build the deck around the pool, if possible. Otherwise, call in a qualified contractor to offer advice on modifying the deck to support the weight of the pool.

    Codes and Covenants

    • Follow city and county building codes, and property development covenants when building a deck and installing a pool. Some codes and covenants specify the deck and pool must sit a certain distance from the property line. The rules may limit the size of the deck or pool. Safety features are sometimes required, including a secure enclosure around the pool.

    Warnings and Tips

    • Consult with a licensed engineer or architect before beginning a pool or deck installation. The expert can advise you if your project requires a building permit or other approval from the government. Installing a pool or building a deck without first obtaining the proper permit may result in a fine.
