Filters remove particles from the water in your hot tub through a simple water filtration process. Regardless of the type of filter, these machines take water from the surface, pump it through a heater and return the filtered water into the hot tub through a series a pipes. The hot tub jets pump the filtered water back into the tub. This process ensures that your water is free of particles, hairs, skin cells, leaves, twigs and other unwanted contaminants. Filters do not sanitize the water; the chemicals you place in the water perform this job.
Filters require basic monthly care to ensure their longevity. Clean your filter once a month by removing it and spraying a hose into the filter socket. Occasionally you may need to use a filter solution to remove built-up grime. Replace the filter once a year.
Most hot tubs have suction filter systems. These are mounted on the top edge of the hot tub to provide easy access to the filter cartridge. This filter is made of a heavy paper-like fiber called remay. Some suction filters have floating weirs, which unscrew to remove the filter cartridge. Other suction filters have skimmer baskets that hold the drop-in filter cartridge.
Older hot tubs and certain models produced today use pressure filters, which are less convenient but still perform the job. Pressure filters are housed in sealed canisters and are separate units from the skimmer. Suction filters are easier to manage because they make removing the filter cartridge more practical. To access pressure filter canister you must open up the hot tub’s equipment compartment.
