How Do Jetted Tubs Drain?

Determine whether the time is right to drain your tub. Spa Depot recommends using a formula to determine the frequency of drainage. Divide the number of gallons your tub holds by three, then divide that number by the number of bathers that use the hot tub daily on average. The result is the recommended number of days you should wait between each draining. When in doubt, use TDS test strips to determine the water quality. These test trips measure the total dissolved solids in your tub; high levels of TDS cause water cloudiness and other problems. Drain your tub when TDS levels exceed 1,500 parts per million. Drain your tub before you close it for the winter.

Add plumbing flush chemicals to the water. These chemicals help remove grime and mineral deposits from the tub’s plumbing system and should be used during every draining. Follow the directions on the packaging and add the recommended quantity according to the number of gallons your tub holds.

Turn off the heat by switching it to the "Off" position at the power supply or unplugging the system. Remove the filter and bring it inside your house to dry it out and clean it if necessary.

Attach a garden hose firmly to the drain spout by screwing in the nozzle and stretch the hose to an area of the property you don’t mind flooding temporarily. You can also direct it into a nearby sewage drain. Open the spout and allow the water to drain. This process usually takes about half an hour depending on the size of the tub.

If winterizing the tub, use a wet/dry vacuum to eliminate any leftover water in the tub, spout and plumbing. Don’t worry if a little water gets left behind; it will evaporate eventually in time for the cold weather. Cover the tub securely to avoid leaves, snow and rainwater from entering.
