Do I Need a Bench Around a Hot Tub?

Evidence of humans utilizing heated water for therapeutic reasons dates back nearly 5,000 years ago, and the use of hot water bathing has been enjoyed by every civilization since. Modern hot tubs are technologically advanced machines designed to revitalize and renew your aching muscles. While the design of a hot tub can vary, if you use this as a main source of entertaining, you may want to install a bench around the hot tub.
  1. Benefits

    • Perhaps one of the more notable benefits of having a bench around a hot tub is having a place to safely cool off after soaking in the water. Because hot tubs can raise your internal temperature, benches allow you the flexibility to completely remove yourself from the spa. Another prominent benefit is having ample seating around the hot tub when you’re entertaining guests. While every guest may not be able to simultaneously soak in the tub, benches around the hot tub allow you and your friends to still congregate in the same area.

    Size of Bench

    • The size of the bench is dependent on two factors: space around the hot tub and your desired look for this area. If you have a smaller area, installing a single bench near the hot tub may be ideal; if you have a large deck or yard, you may install a wrap-around bench. When determining the size of your bench, consider the average number of people that will be enjoying the hot tub as well as the size of the working space.

    Installation

    • Installing a bench around your hot tub may be done in a weekend if you have the proper tools and construction knowledge. While the exact tools required to build the bench will vary according to your design, you will typically need wood, bolts to secure the bench, wood cutting saw, nails, hammer and a level. It is imperative the bench is secured to the deck or other permanent fixture to prevent the bench from falling into the hot tub.

    Considerations

    • While built-in benches can add a visually interesting dynamic to your hot tub, if you do not have the capacity to install it yourself and cannot afford to hire a contractor, consider purchasing a pre-fabricated bench. These benches are manufactured out of steel or wood and come in a variety of sizes and designs. This may not provide a built-in appearance, but it is a hassle-free way of adding seating around your hot tub.
