How to Stop Leaks on My Pool Pump With PVC Glue

A leaking pool pump is a clear indicator that something is wrong. Leaks can stem from a variety of problems within the pump, but one of the most common reasons swimming pool pumps leak is because of a worn out O-ring. The O-ring creates a watertight seal between the pump mechanics and the pump lid. Because the O-ring is made of rubber, it will crack and wear out over time. While the best course of action is to replace the worn out O-ring, you can temporarily repair a damaged O-ring with PVC glue until you have time to replace it.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the pump.

    • 2

Turn the pump lid counterclockwise to loosen it. Remove the lid from the pump housing.

    • 3

Peel the O-ring away from its location inside the lid. Take care not to further damage the O-ring when removing it.

    • 4

Place the O-ring on a flat work surface. Dry it thoroughly with a lint-free cloth.

    • 5

Pick up the O-ring and thread it through your hands, pulling the rubber apart gently as you move around the ring until you find the damaged area. There may be more than one damaged area on your O-ring.

    • 6

Dip the tip of a cotton swab in the PVC glue. Dab the PVC glue onto the damaged areas. Wipe away excess glue immediately with a damp paper towel. The glue should fill any holes or cracks in the O-ring without dripping over the sides.

    • 7

Place the O-ring in a cool, dry place for several hours. This gives the glue time to harden.

    • 8

Smear the O-ring with a water-based mechanical lubricant. Then re-install the O-ring in the pump cap.
