How to Make a Stone Veneer Hot Tub Surround

Wash off the backs of the stones to provide a cleaner surface for the mortar.

Prepare a batch of mortar, mixing it until it has the consistency of mashed potatoes. Mix the mortar with a ratio of 2 parts washed sand and 1 part portland cement.

Brush water onto the back of the first stone to be installed on the surround. The water is absorbed into the stone, preventing the stone from absorbing water from the mortar as it sets, which can create cracks in the mortar.

Begin laying the veneer on the bottom of the surround, and work toward the top. Apply 1/2 inch of mortar to the back of the stone and the spot on the surround where you are installing it.

Place the stone into the mortar on the surround. Twist the stone slightly as you do this.

Install stones on the rest of the surround, using the same process you used for the first stone. Wipe away any mortar that gets on the front of the stones before it dries. If necessary, cut stones to fit the surround with a wet saw.

Place grout into the joints between each stone on the surround, using a grout bag. Smooth the surface of the grout with a joint tool. Allow the mortar to set for the time specified on the packaging.

Install capstones along the top ledge of the surround, adhering them to the surround with masonry adhesive. If there is no ledge around the rim of the hot tub, skip this step.

Apply concrete sealer to the stones to protect the finish.
