The Best Cover for a Sand-Filtered Hot Tub

A sand-filtered hot tub or spa uses a filter with a fine media such as sand to get rid of unwanted particles. The synthetic sand creates a fine substrate. When water passes through this substrate, the water molecules flow past while particles stay behind, trapped. These filters are a traditional option for pools and spas and shouldn't affect your decision when buying a hot tub cover. Your primary concerns should be durability, weather resistance and strength.
  1. Materials

    • Look for a hot tub cover made from high-density materials so it lasts as long as possible. Most covers are made from some type of plastic foam. Foam density is rated in pounds. The best covers have a 2 or 3 pound density rating. These covers typically come with a 4-inch thickness, so avoid covers that are thinner than this. The foam should have an inner polyethylene layer and a vinyl cover to resist water damage.

    Tapered Designs

    • The best cover for your hot tub will depend on your climate. If you live in an area that experiences frequent rainfall or snowfall, look for a taper design that has a slant or grooves built into the cover. This channels water and snow away from the spa, keeping the material from becoming waterlogged and developing mold issues. Flat covers are perfectly acceptable in drier climates where water issues are not a problem. In very sunny climates, buy a cover that has marine-grade vinyl suited for UV protection.

    Security

    • If children frequently use your hot tub or play nearby, the best cover for your needs should also include some type of security. Many covers come with locks and fasteners designed to keep people from using the hot tub without the key or combination. Tie down straps are handy even if you do not have children. These straps secure the cover in place with a couple of snaps and prevent the cover from blowing away in high winds.

    Usability

    • There are a number of extra features you can choose based on how you use the hot tub. The best, most protective covers can weigh between 40 and 45 pounds. If this sounds heavy, buy a cover that has an automatic or pulley-based lifting system that makes it much easier to remove the cover. Even with the most durable materials, covers only last several years at the most, so do not consider this a one-time expense. The best type of hot tub cover may be the one you can afford to replace occasionally rather than one with all the bells and whistles.
