Soft-Sided Vs. Hard-Sided Above-Ground Pools

Above-ground pools are less expensive to purchase, install and maintain then in-ground pools. These attributes make them perfect for homeowners who want the perks of owning a pool, without the high price tag. Several factors determine whether a homeowner should purchase a soft or hard-sided above-ground pool.
  1. Materials

    • Hard-sided above-ground pools are sturdy and, once installed, are essentially a permanent structure in the landscape. They are made of durable, flexible metal siding with a hard resin or metal frame. Liners are necessary to make swimming in a hard-sided pool more comfortable. These liners are heavy-duty vinyl and come in a variety of styles. Soft-sided pools are made of a flexible, durable material that is similar to the material from which bullet proof vests are made. This material makes soft-sided pools puncture and tear resistant. Soft-sided pools are supported by sturdy metal frames.

    Installation

    • Soft-side pools are simple to install and do not require any expertise. They take a few hours to assemble, but can be taken down and moved without any trouble. Soft-sided pools can be installed on any substrate, including dirt, gravel, concrete or grass. They do not require level ground for instillation. Hard-sided pools require, level, solid ground for proper instillation. Hard-sided pools are not easily moved and some models require professional installation.

    Cost

    • Cost is often the determining factor in decision making. Soft-sided pools range in price from $900 to $3,000 depending on the size and shape of the pool. Hard-sided pools range in price from $600 to $7,000 depending on construction materials, size and shape. Additional costs for both pools include filters, pumps, heaters and cleaning supplies. Landscaping costs and installation costs may also apply to hard-sided pools.

    Other Considerations

    • Aside from which type of pool you purchase, there are other important factors to consider when installing a pool. You need a level, open space free from any obstructions like power lines, trees or structures. Pools shaded by trees or homes may require a heater. The shape of your pool is also an important aspect to consider. Above-ground pools come in oval, round or rectangle. Round pools are ideal for families with children, while oval and rectangle pools are often used as lap pools. Families with children should also consider the height or depth of the pool; shorter rail-height is desirable for small children.
