How to Get Electricity to a Spa Heater

Permanent electrical appliances, such as spa heaters, are rarely designed with a plug-type electrical interface. Instead, three or four stripped electrical wires are provided for connection to an electrical circuit. These major appliances are often professionally installed, but there's no reason that a homeowner cannot install the electrical circuit for a spot heater themselves.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire cutters/strippers
  • Appropriate gauge electrical wire
  • Vacant electrical breaker of the proper amperage rating
  • Wire connectors

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the color-coded electrical wires exiting the spot heater. White or gray indicates a neutral wire, and green or green-striped indicates a ground wire. There are no standardized requirements in the National Electrical Code for a hot, current-carrying wire, but usually a black or red wire is used for this purpose.

    • 2

Strip the plastic covering off the ends of the electrical wires that will be used for the spa-heater circuit.

    • 3

Connect each wire from the spa heater to its associated wire on the electrical circuit, using wire connectors. These wires are associated by their function -- for example, neutral or ground.

    • 4

Run the electrical circuit wire to the electrical breaker box within the home.

    • 5

Turn the main circuit breaker for the home to the "off" or "open" position.

    • 6

Connect each wire to its appropriate mounting point on the chosen circuit breaker within the breaker box. Connect the hot wires -- there may be two -- to the electrical circuit breaker at the marked screws. Wrap the electrical wire around each mounting screw, and tighten the screw to hold it in place.

    • 7

Connect the neutral wire to the electrical panel's busbar. The busbar is a metal strip lining the outside perimeter of the electrical panel. The neutral wire is twisted around one of the available screws, which is then tightened to hold it in place. The grounding wire may also be connected to the busbar if it's the home's main service panel.

    • 8

Restore electricity to the home by turning the main circuit breaker back to the "on" or "closed" position.

    • 9

Check the spa heater to ensure it's operating correctly.
