The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act was established in 2008. The law requires main drain covers and grates comply with the American National Standards Institute’s A112.19.8 standard, which covers water suction fittings for pools and spas. The law applies to public pools and spas, but residential pools and spas constructed after December 2008 must adhere to the safety requirements.
As of November 2008, main drain covers that meet federal requirements are marked with “VGB 2008.” If the main drain cover was manufactured before November 2008, some are marked with “ANSI/ASME A112.19.8” to show compliance with federal regulations. Some manufacturers prepared for the new law before it was enforced, but it’s likely a main drain cover isn’t compliant if it was manufactured before May 2008.
Pool and spa main drain covers come in a variety of sizes. Standard sizes include round covers ranging from 8 to 10 inches in diameter. Standard square sizes generally are 8 by 8 inches and up to 36 by 36 inches. Some pools and spas require a custom drain, which can be designed to comply with the federal safety requirements.
Some states apply stricter requirements for pool and spa safety than the federal law enforces. State laws can affect the size and type of main drain cover required for public or residential pools. Check state laws pertaining to pools and spas, which is typically available on each state’s website.
