How to Install a Pool Filler

Pool filters that use sand are readily available and simple to assemble. For most filters, the installation method is the same or similar, but it is best to consult the owner's manual for the filter system. The retailer you bought the filter from may also be able to help you with the installation. Pool filters use sand to clean impurities and debris from the water pumped into the filter; clean water is then released back into the pool. The sand fulfills the same purpose that it does on a beach, by catching and holding impurities as the water washes over it.

  • Teflon tape
  • Silicon lubricant
  • Straight thread adapter
  • Purple primer

Instructions

    • 1

Install the filter in line between the pump and the chlorinator. This ensures that water is pulled from the pool by the pump, run through the filter then released to be chlorinated before returning to the pool.

    • 2

Position the filter so that the various ports line up with the existing connections on the pump and the chlorinator. The less length of pipe involved, the better the unit will function.

    • 3

Assemble your filter system, according to the instructions provided in the installation guide. This usually entails installing the pressure gauge, securing the drain cap and installing the laterals. The laterals are pipes that rest inside the canister in a star formation and actually push the water through the sand to filter it. To assemble these, fill the tank halfway with water. Insert the laterals and the center pipe where they connect into the tank and fan out the laterals. Center the core pipe in the opening and seal the top of the pipe with tape or shield it with cardboard before pouring sand into the tank. Fill the tank with sand to about 6 inches from the top of the tank.

    • 4

Locate the rubber O-ring included with the filter that seals the valve cap when you place it over the top of the tank. Lubricate the ring with silicon lubricant then install it.

    • 5

Remove the tape or otherwise uncover the core pipe then fit the valve cap over the pipe. Be sure the O-ring is positioned correctly to create a good seal.

    • 6

Install the clamp that tightens and holds the valve cap in place. Do not tighten it all the way until you have made certain that everything is positioned correctly.

    • 7

Connect the pump discharge piping to the pump port on the filter. If needed, use a straight thread adapter to connect the two then wrap two layers of Teflon tape around the connecting portions' threads to create a seal when they are screwed together.

    • 8

Use purple primer and glue in two steps to connect a short length of pipe to the adapter. Clean off the surfaces to be connected then paint on the primer. Apply the glue then insert the pipe into the adapter. Rotate the adapter a 1/4-turn to spread and seal the glue. Allow to set for 30 seconds.

    • 9

Repeat the same procedure to attach a union to the opposite end of the pipe. This union makes removing the connecting pipe for maintenance and cleaning much easier.

    • 10

Attach an adapter to the pump on the discharge side. Then connect the pump and filter with the minimum amount of elbows and piping needed.

    • 11

Add an adapter and union to the return port on the filter. Connect the return port to the chlorinator in a basic setup. Again, use the least amount of piping and elbows for maximum performance.

    • 12

Connect the waste port to a waste water hose directed away from the pool. Then tighten down the clamp that holds the multi-port valve cap in place.
