How to Troubleshoot a Teledyne Pool Heater

Teledyne Laars pool heaters use a natural gas-fired burner to heat the water. These efficient units keep swimming pool water at a constant temperature by cycling the water through the system and pumping warmed water back into the pool. The reason for a nonfunctioning Teledyne Laars pool heater may be as simple as a clogged filter or as complicated as a problem requiring professional assistance. Before calling in your pool maintenance team, follow some basic troubleshooting steps to help eliminate simple problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the area for the smell of gas. If there is a gas smell, immediately shut off the gas supply to the heater and contact your gas supplier to examine the system for a dangerous gas leak. Inspect the control panel of the unit; if it displays the message "AGS" then contact an authorized repair service to correct the gas pressure. Do not use the heater.

    • 2

Locate the pilot light if the unit is equipped with continuous ignition. Units with a pilot light contain a viewing window, much like a home furnace, allowing you to check your pilot light. Make sure the pilot light burns steadily. If it doesn't, call in a service technician.

    • 3

Remove the filter from the filter unit outside of the main gas burner. Check the filter carefully for debris and either replace the filter with a new filter or rinse the old filter with clear water until clean. Replace the filter and secure the filter housing.

    • 4

Check the flue for physical blockages preventing the air from circulating in the heater correctly.

    • 5

Check the fan on the unit to ensure it is appropriately adjusted to create the correct draw and exhaust. If your display panel shows the code "Air Flw Sw," your fan requires professional attention.

    • 6

Verify that the temperature sensor running between the pool and the heater is correctly installed. If your control panel displays "Temp Sensor" as an error, the sensor needs replacement or adjustment.
