How to Troubleshoot a Hot Tub's Air Control Valve

When the air control valve on a hot tub malfunctions, the jets might not work properly or might only spurt water occasionally. Troubleshooting this problem might require disassembling the jets to inspect the air control valve, so if you are not confident in your ability to do this task safely and effectively, contact your hot tub manufacturer or another qualified service worker. Always disconnect power to the hot tub and allow the motor to cool fully before proceeding with troubleshooting methods.

Instructions

Grab the problem jet and rotate the outer adjustment ring in a counterclockwise motion until the ring stops moving. Increase pressure on the adjustment ring and continue moving the ring in a counterclockwise motion. Pull out the jet when the adjustment ring clicks and the internal mechanism releases.

    • 2

Place the jet assembly in a bucket of clean water and slowly turn the jet nozzle in a clockwise motion and back and forth to swish water through the jet. Continue for about two minutes or until all debris is free of the jet assembly. Ensure that each jet has an O-ring installed; replace the O-ring if it's missing or damaged. The O-ring is the rubber ring, usually black or gray, that is placed inside the jet assembly and fits against the valve. Evidence that the O-ring is damaged includes signs that the rubber is split, broken or cracked, which will allow water to enter the air line.

    • 3

Reinsert the jet assembly into the hot tub jet housing and press slightly while turning the jet clockwise until a snap is felt. Rotate the jet back and forth until the nozzle moves freely.

    • 4

Locate the skimmer area on the hot tub and find the air control valve, usually above the skimmer valve on the hot tub wall. The air control valve is usually clear, white or gray and looks like a small dial. Unscrew the air control valve, also called the bleeder valve, and remove the valve from the hot tub.

    • 5

Place the hose of a wet-vacuum over the air control valve fitting and drain out any standing water inside the air control valve housing.

    • 6

Clean out the air control valve with water and a clean cloth, then replace the air control and tighten in a clockwise motion.
