How to Patch a Solar Panel Pool

Solar panels attached to an outdoor swimming pool can begin to leak after they have been in use for a while. Leaky panels are due to exposure to freezing temperatures and ultraviolet rays of the sun, which can cause the tubes to crack or burst. It is important to repair leaks in solar panels in order to prevent water loss and to keep your pool heated efficiently. Small leaks in solar panels are relatively easy to repair on your own once you find where the panel is leaking. For larger repairs, you should contact a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your solar panel heating system and allow water to flow through the panels. Locate the leaks by looking for any drips and water leakage in the panels. Mark the location with chalk.

    • 2

Turn off the system and unplug any electrical lines going into the panels. Allow the water to drain out of the panels.

    • 3

Clean the area of the panel that is to be repaired. Apply a small amount of alcohol on a cotton ball to remove any dirt and debris from the panel and dry it with a clean cloth.

    • 4

Cut and remove the leaky section of the tube with a razor blade or utility knife. Cut at least a 1-inch section of the tube to allow room for the repair.

    • 5

Place a rubber solar panel repair piece into the slot where you cut the tube away.

    • 6

Coat the tube with a small amount of liquid nails to seal the repair. Allow the repair to dry overnight.

    • 7

Reconnect any electrical connections and turn your pool pump on. Watch for any other leaks in the panels.
