How to Connect Hot Tub Motors

Hot tubs offer warm alternatives to outdoor pools, or a place to relax outside when there isn't space for a full-size swimming pool. Like pools, hot tubs rely on pumps driven by electric motors to circulate water, allowing it to be filtered and heated. Connecting a hot tub motor is part of the initial installation process, and a way to give a hot tub new life if the motor fails but the rest of the pump assembly, plumbing and wiring are intact.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Wire strippers
  • Hot tub motor with mounting hardware
  • Socket set with driver

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the power supply to the hot tub by removing a fuse or placing the circuit breaker in the off position in your electrical box. Open the hot tub's access panel by unscrewing the screws that hold it in place and depressing the pressure clips.

    • 2

Locate the hot tub pump assembly, which is a metal housing connected to two or more PVC pipes.

    • 3

Determine whether your hot tub pump uses a separate grounding wire, which will be an exposed copper wire that connects a terminal on the pump to a metal rod driven into the ground. Untwist the wire to remove it.

    • 4

Close any valves between the tub and the pump, or insert a drain plug into the drain line from inside the tub.

    • 5

Unscrew the plastic unions that hold the pump in place by hand, twisting them counterclockwise. Unscrew any mounting screws that hold the pump to its base. Remove the pump and allow any water inside it to drain out.

    • 6

Inspect the wires that exit from the pump housing. Snip off any rusted or damaged ends with wire strippers. Strip off 1/2 inch of plastic insulation from the end of each wire.

    • 7

Remove the wiring access plate that covers one end of your new hot tub motor, either by removing screws or depressing the clips that hold the plate to the motor.

    • 8

Loosen the screws next to the wire terminals inside the motor housing one-half turn counterclockwise with a Phillips head screwdriver. Refer to the installation guide that came with the motor to determine which terminals are intended for each of the wires on your pump, which should be labeled or color-coded.

    • 9

Insert the appropriate wires into the motor terminals. Tighten the screw next to each terminal as you insert the corresponding wire until it feels tight.

    • 10

Place the pump housing against the open end of the motor, concealing any extra length of wires inside. Tighten the screws that mount the motor to the pump.

    • 11

Place the pump assembly back onto its base inside your hot tub's control and equipment bay. Replace the screws you removed to release the pump. Insert new motor mount screws or bolts that came with the pump using a screwdriver or socket driver. Reattach the grounding wire if you removed one in step 3.

    • 12

Replace the access panel door. Turn the power back on to prepare to test the motor.
