Installing Fiberglass Swimming Pools

The proper installation of a fiberglass swimming pool can lead to years of enjoyment without the high cost of traditional inground pools. A poured-concrete pool requires installation of a ground drain, feeder lines and pump. Because of these requirements, the area for the pool is restricted and the cost higher. A pre-fabricated fiberglass pool requires no ground drain, and most models have an external, above-ground pump, similar to those used for above-ground or temporary swimming pool setups. While professional installation is suggested, it can be a do-it-yourself project with the proper tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Call 811 or your local utility companies to locate any buried wires and water lines in the yard. Locate and mark sewer or septic lines. If relocation of any utilities is necessary for installation, seek professional assistance. Do not dig until you are aware of any and all buried lines.

    • 2

Measure and mark the area for the pool. Use the specifications for the pre-fabricated fiberglass pool for width and length. Use a measuring tape to measure and mark the area with chalk.

    • 3

Dig out the hole. Use a backhoe or shovel to remove the soil in the chalk-marked area. Be sure to measure for the depth, using the specifications of the pool. Remove the soil from the area using a wheelbarrow.

    • 4

Level the bottom of the hole. The fiberglass pool requires the bottom of the hole to be level, unless it is a multi-depth model. Use a shovel and construction level to smooth and even out the bottom of the hole in preparation.

    • 5

Place the pool in the hole. The pool will arrive from the supplier intact. It will be lowered with a crane mechanism into the waiting hole.

    • 6

Fill in the area around the edges. The specifications for the hole will be slightly larger than the pool itself. Fill in the extra space with the dirt previously removed.

    • 7

Drill the holes and set up the pump. Many manufacturers will complete the drilling prior to delivery. If not, use a power drill and a flat disc attachment to drill along the exposed edge of the pool. Place the PVC pipes for the pump through the holes, and use the provided hardware to secure it. Attach the pump to the pipes.

Fill the pool. Contact your local water supplier for the best options for filling in your area.
