How to Safely Wire a Homemade Hot Tub

There's nothing like relaxing in a hot tub, especially if it's homemade and customized. Once the tub has been set up, you'll need to wire it safely before it can be used. Most hot tubs require 220-volt circuits to operate. One of the circuits runs the pump and jets in the tub, while another runs the heater. Wiring a homemade tub up to an outdoor circuit breaker will keep it operating safely.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 4-wire line
  • Flexible conduit
  • Utility knife
  • Screwdriver
  • Wire strippers
  • Clamps/screws
  • Drill and bit
  • Anchors

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power at the outdoor GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) breaker where you will be connecting the hot tub. Lift up the cover and flip the breakers to the "off" position.

    • 2

Measure the distance from the breaker box out to the hot tub for the conduit. Do so along the wall or other surface where you will be mounting the conduit, not in a straight line.

    • 3

Cut the appropriate amount of flexible conduit to size with shears or a utility knife. Insert one end of a four-line wire into one end of the conduit and push it through until it emerges at the other end.

    • 4

Loosen the screw on the locking collar at the bottom of the breaker box. Feed the wires up through the locking collar and into the body of the breaker. Insert the end of the flexible conduit in the locking collar and tighten the screw.

    • 5

Remove the last half inch from the wires inside the breaker box with a wire stripper. Loosen the terminal screws at the bottom of the breaker. Connect the black wire to the screw beneath where the black wire connects at the top of the breaker, the red wire beneath to the terminal beneath where the red wire connects and the white wire to the terminal at the bottom between the white and red wires. Tighten the terminal screws once the wires are connected. Connect the green wire to the grounding bar to the side of the breaker box.

    • 6

Run the conduit out to the electrical panel on the homemade spa. Secure the conduit along the sides of a house or deck with screws and clamps. Drill holes in concrete and use anchors if mounting in this type of surface.

    • 7

Remove the electrical panel on the spa. Strip the end of the wires. Connect the green wire to the grounding point inside the spa. Connect the black wire to the terminal marked "L1," the red wire to the terminal marked "L2" and the white wire to the terminal marked "neutral."

    • 8

Replace the electrical panel. Restore power to the circuit breaker.
