How to Install a Flexible PVC Pool Filter

A clean, well-maintained pool is not only attractive and inviting, but it is also necessary to keep your family safe from harmful microbes. A pool filter is an essential part of keeping your pool clean, along with the appropriate chemicals and manual cleaning. Connecting a filter to your pool is a straightforward task that can be accomplished using flexible PVC pipe. This type of PVC pipe is as strong as regular rigid PVC piping.

Things You'll Need

  • Flexible PVC pipe
  • Utility knife
  • Shears
  • PVC tape
  • PVC primer
  • PVC cement or glue
  • 2 shut-off valves
  • PVC adapters
  • O-rings
  • Teflon tape, if needed

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a level area to place the pool filter. The location should be strong enough to support the weight of the filter. For example, a flat concrete surface that is close to the pool.

    • 2

Measure and cut the lengths of flexible PVC you need to connect the filter to the pool. Flexible PVC can be cut using a simple utility knife or a pair of shears. Trim the edges of the PVC pipe with sandpaper to make them smooth.

    • 3

Place the filter on the strong, level surface, then connect one end of a PVC pipe to the filter's intake line and another length to the outflow line. Both lines will be clearly labeled on the filter. The intake line brings water into the filter. The outtake line takes water away from the filter. Follow the filter's installation instructions to connect the PVC pipe, which may require using PVC primer and glue or cement.

    • 4

Attach one shut-off valve along the length of PVC pipe running into the filter and another one leaving the filter. This is useful in case you need to close off the flow of water if the filter needs to be repaired. Use cement or glue to attach the valve to the pipe. Allow time for the glue or cement to properly dry according to the manufacturer's instructions before running water through the PVC pipes.

    • 5

Connect the outflow line PVC piping from the filter to the pool. Use the necessary joints and adapters to run the PVC. To do this, you may need glue, cement, O-rings and Teflon tape. Because flexible PVC can bend to about 90 degrees, elbows are not necessary. In many pump-filter configurations, the pump and filter are in line and located close to each other on the same level surface. The pool's intake line goes straight into the pump. Connect the filter to the pump by attaching the pump's discharge line to the filter's intake PVC pipe line using the appropriate connections.

Place the cartridge into the filter or add sand according to the filter manufacturer's instructions. For example, if it is a sand filter, it is recommended to fill it at least partway with water after adding the sand.

    • 7

Open the pool filter's air release valve to remove any air in the filter's tank, then turn on the pool pump. Check all of the connections and the entire length of all the flexible PVC piping for leaks.
