How to Install a Hayward Pool Vac Ultra Pool Cleaner

Hayward’s Pool Vac Ultra is an automatic pool cleaner that vacuums an inground pool and discharges dirt and debris into the pool’s existing filtration system. The drive system of the Pool Vac Ultra is powered by the suction force of the pool pump, and does not require an additional power source. The Pool Vac Ultra is programmed to execute a grid pattern of right and left turns to provide full cleaning coverage of the entire bottom of the pool.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify the water in the pool is at the correct level above all skimmer outlets. Check to make sure no large objects are in the pool that might obstruct underwater movement of the Pool Vac.

    • 2

Test the pool chemistry and make sure it is properly balanced. The pool should be algae-free, as the presence of slick algae on pool surfaces may affect the performance of the Pool Vac.

    • 3

Backwash the pool filter, and clean the pool pump strainer basket and the skimmer baskets of all debris.

    • 4

      Turn off the pool pump.

    • 5

Connect a four-foot Pool Vac hose segment to the leader hose segment that attaches to the Pool Vac unit. Add enough additional 4-foot segments to extend from the skimmer port you plan to utilize for vacuuming to the most distant point in the pool, plus two additional segments.

    • 6

Place the hose in the pool and completely fill it with water. Press-fit the flow gauge into the end of the leader hose. Loop that end around and secure it to the side of the first hose section with the included C-clip.

    • 7

      Turn on the pool pump.

    • 8

Press-fit the skimmer cone adapter onto the male end of the assembled hose. Thread the end of the hose into the skimmer box, and plug the cone adapter into the suction port at the bottom of the skimmer.

    • 9

Observe the black disk indicator on the flow gauge. The disk should appear in the box midway between the “Min” and “Max” marks. If the black disk is outside the box in the “Max” range, adjust skimmer valves to reduce the suction force until the disk appears inside the box. A reading that is outside the box and in the “Min” range indicates a suction leak or other problem elsewhere not associated with the Pool Vac equipment.

    • 10

Remove the flow gauge from the end of the leader hose. Release the C-clip securing the leader hose to the side of the first hose segment.

    • 11

Set the rear flap adjuster dial on the Pool Vac unit to the middle position marked “II.”

    • 12

Submerge the Pool Vac in shallow water until all air escapes from the unit and no more bubbles are visible.

    • 13

Connect the cuff on the end of the leader hose to the port on the top of the Pool Vac, and allow the unit to sink to the bottom of the pool.

    • 14

Observe the Pool Vac as it moves across the bottom of the pool. Make sure the return hose is not hindering the Pool Vac’s movement or programmed turns. If the Pool Vac seems to linger for an excessive period of time when it meets vertical obstructions such as walls or steps, set the rear flap adjuster dial on the Pool Vac unit to the position marked “I.” If the Pool Vac rises to the surface and sucks air into the system, set the rear flap adjuster dial on the Pool Vac unit to the position marked “I.”
