How to Replace a Lamppost Base on Cement

The light from a lamppost in your front yard can make your home safer by deterring criminals and brightening your exterior. Some lampposts are installed by mounting the bottom of the post onto a small concrete (made from cement mixed with gravel and water) base in the ground. If the lamppost becomes damaged, or you want to install a new one, you can replace it by removing it from the base.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off power to the lamp at your home's main electrical panel. Test the circuit by turning the lamp on and off.

    • 2

Remove the cover that encases the lightbulbs from the top of the lamppost. This can be a glass globe or a framed enclosure with glass panels and a roof on the top.

    • 3

Remove the lightbulbs from the lamp, and test the circuit with a voltage tester to ensure that it is dead.

    • 4

Remove the top section of the lamppost, if it has multiple sections. If this is the case, there will be a bolt or a part called a knuckle in the center of the post.

    • 5

Detach the bottom section of the post from the post base.

    • 6

Remove the nuts that secure the post base to the anchor bolts that are embedded inside the concrete. Lift the base of the lamppost off of the concrete base.

    • 7

Slide the new base onto the concrete over the anchor bolts. If the holes on the new post base do not line up with the anchor bolts, cut off the anchor bolts where they extend above the concrete and install concrete anchors and bolts into the concrete to fit the new base. Drill holes for the anchors into the concrete with a hammer drill.
