How to Grout a Fountain

Fountains are comprised of a variety of materials including ceramic tile and flat natural stones, among others. When installers use tiles or stone to create a fountain, additional grout is required to fill in the gaps between each of them. Because the grout has constant exposure to water, it is different than grout used for other tile projects. In addition, the grout requires a sealer to further prevent moisture penetration from occurring.

Instructions

    • 1

Install all of the stone or the tiles on the fountain using the adhesive or thinset recommend by the tile manufacturer. After the installation, leave the fountain alone for 24 hours to allow it to set fully before commencing with the grouting process.

    • 2

Open plastic tarps and spread them over the ground around the fountain to protect it from grout stains. Put on safety glasses, disposable rubber gloves and a dust mask to prevent from inhaling the grout dust.

    • 3

Open a bag of epoxy-based sanded grout and pour it into a five-gallon bucket or a wheelbarrow. Mix in the amount of water indicated on the grout bag until all of the powder is moist and you get a consistency similar to thick peanut butter. Leave the grout for five to 10 minutes to allow the powder to absorb all of the water.

    • 4

Scoop up a handful of the grout and press it onto the surface of the fountain, concentrating mainly on the gaps in between the tiles or stones. Continue adding more grout as needed until no gaps remain. Run your hand over the tops of the tiles or stones to scrape off the excess grout.

    • 5

Wait one hour and wipe the top of the tie or stones with a sponge dampened in warm water to remove the excess grout from them. Fill a bucket with warm water and rinse the sponge frequently. Rewipe the fountain every 20 minutes until no haze remains on the fountain surface.

Wait 24 hours and apply an outdoor penetrating sealer to the grout. Pour the sealer into a bowl and apply it only to the grout using a foam paint brush. Let it dry for two hours and apply a second coat of sealer to the grout.
