How to Build a Built in Outdoor Grill

A built-in outdoor grill creates a new purpose for your outdoor area. Barbecues with friends and family, summer parties and weeknight fry-ups all become possible. You don’t need much brick-laying experience to build your own grill. You can make a dry-stacked grill that is held together with surface-bonding cement. This means not worrying about mortar, as well as creating an attractive finish with the surface-bonding cement, which looks much better than exposed brick.

      Lay a brick base on top of a level, heat-safe surface, such as a paver patio or concrete area that is 14 bricks wide and three brick’s deep, making it 24-by-56 inches.

      Stand so the base’s front, one of the 56-inch sides, is in front of you. On the base’s left side, create a square “U” shape that is three bricks long, one brick across and another three bricks long. The one brick across should be at the base’s back farthest from where you are standing.

      Make another square “U” shape on the base’s right side. Lay bricks lengthwise along the base’s back between the two “U” shapes. This is the grill walls’ first row.

      Lay another seven rows of bricks on top of the first row, so that the grill’s height, including the base is nine bricks high or roughly 36 inches.

      Mix up a batch of surface-bonding cement in a bucket, following the manufacturer’s instructions for mixing. Spread a one-half inch thick layer of the cement over the entire grill structure using a trowel. At the base’s edge, feather out the cement into the concrete or patio area about 2 inches. Let the cement cure for three days.

      Apply heatproof adhesive to the tops of the two “U” shaped brick sections and stick a 16-by-24-inch piece of countertop on top of both sections. This creates preparation surfaces one either side of the grill with a storage area underneath the countertop.

      Measure up 15 inches from the grill’s base on the inside of the storage area in the “U” shape. On either side of the interior walls of the “U,” position an angle bracket with one arm jutting out at a right angle from the walls. Secure the angle brackets in place with 1-inch screws fastened to the walls with screw anchors. Repeat on the other “U” area. Sliding piece of 8-by-24-inch sheet metal onto the bracket arms creates a shelf on either side of the grill.

      Measure down 2 inches from the grill section’s top. Position four angle brackets against the interior walls creating the first ledge for the grill plate. Secure the brackets to the walls as you did for the shelves in the “U” shape areas.

      Measure down 4 inches from the first set of angle brackets and attach another four. Repeat this two times, so you have four ledges. The coal plate goes on the bottom ledge, and the grill plate can move between the top three to achieve a hotter or cooler grilling temperature.
