Mark the location of the landscaping column on the ground using spray chalk to draw a square or rectangular shape, depending on preference. The column should have a width and length of at least 24 inches for stability, but larger columns are also acceptable.
Dig out the soil in the center of the chalk line using a shovel until it is 4 inches deep. Lay a level on the bottom of the hole to ensure the air bubble centers and dig out additional soil as needed until the base is even.
Pour crushed rock or gravel into the hole until it reaches 4 inches high. Smooth the top out until even and then compact the rock tightly using a hand tamper tool. To use a hand tamper, simply hit the gravel hard with the flat portion of the tool.
Install four stone or concrete blocks around the outside of the gravel area, arranging them so they form a square. When properly arranged there is an open square area in the center of the blocks. The ends of each block should touch each other.
Place the level on top of the blocks and if they are not even, tap the tops with a rubber mallet until they are.
Start a second row of blocks by placing them in another square on top of the first row. When you install the second row, stagger the seams so that they do not align with those in the first row.
Level the second row just as you did with the first. Proceed to install additional rows of blocks using this method until you reach the desired height.
Turn a post cap upside down and apply a 1/2-inch-wide strip of construction adhesive along the entire perimeter. Pick up the cap, turn it over and press it into place on top of the column as the finishing touch.
