How to Install a Shed Latch

Installing a latch to lock your shed is a simple project that can be completed in under an hour. While many varieties of commercially available latch styles exist, a simple hasp-type latch is functional, durable and easy to install. A hasp latch kit includes a hinged hasp or steel strap and a catch with a U-shaped bolt. When the latch is engaged, the U-bolt in the catch passes through a slot in the hasp. The shank of a padlock passes through the U-bolt to secure the shed door.

Instructions

Position the catch on the door frame where you plan to install it. Make sure the U-bolt is oriented horizontally. Center the catch to the frame so installation screws can be securely installed. Pass the tip of a pencil through each screw hole in the catch to mark their positions on the door frame. Remove the catch.

Install a drill bit with a smaller diameter than the threaded shanks of the installation screws in the latch kit. Drill a pilot hole through each screw-hole mark on the door frame. Remove the bit and install a driving bit in the drill. Reposition the catch on the door frame, aligning the screw holes in the catch with the pilot holes in the door frame. Using the screws provided in the latch kit, screw the catch to the door frame.

Test-fit the hasp portion of the latch on the shed door. The hasp should be horizontal, and the slot in the hasp should fit easily onto the U-bolt in the catch. Mark the positions of the screw holes in the base plate of the hasp on the shed door. Remove the hasp. Drill a pilot hole through each screw-hole mark on the door.
