Mounting a Backboard Over the Garage

Mount a basketball hoop backboard above your garage so you can play basketball without leaving your yard. Most wall-mounted basketball hoops come in two parts, the frame and the backboard, and with all the necessary mounting hardware. They mount easily to the garage's surface, right above the garage door. Plan to spend about two hours on this project.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up a ladder in front of the garage. Measure the garage's width and divide by two. Place a small mark on the garage to indicate the center. Measure 88 inches up from the ground and place a mark on the garage. Hold a level along that mark, over the center mark. Draw a straight 21-inch long mark on the garage.

    • 2

Hold the frame with the two tabs near the top. Lift it up to the garage. Line up the frame's bottom edge with the line you drew in Step 1.

    • 3

Hold a level along the frame, both horizontally and vertically, and make any necessary adjustments. Mark the location of each screw hole onto the garage and set the frame aside.

    • 4

Drill a 1/8-inch pilot hole through each screw-hole mark. Lift the frame back up to the garage and center the screw holes over the pilot holes. Hold a level horizontally and vertically along the frame and make any necessary adjustments.

    • 5

Secure the mounting frame to the garage with 2 1/2-inch wood screws. Use the supplied hardware and socket wrench to secure the extension arms to the frame. Each arm consists of two long poles with a short bar connecting them near their outer ends. One goes near the frame's top edge and the other goes near the frame's bottom edge.

    • 6

Attach a stabilizer bar to each extension arm using the supplied washers, bolts and nuts. The stabilizer bars fit between the two arms, close to the frame. Lift the backboard up to the end of the extension arms. Line up the bolt holes in the backboard with the bolt holes in the extension arms.

    • 7

Use the supplied bolts, washers and nuts to secure the backboard to the extension arms. Lift the rim up to the backboard and line up the bolt holes. Insert a supplied bolt through each hole and tighten a nut on the back of each.
