How to Make Roof Rakes From a PVC Pipe

Snow can be beautiful on a winter's day, but it can also be dangerous as it builds up on a roof. A roof can collapse under the weight of enough snow. The solution is to regularly remove snow with a roof rake, which you can make with PVC pipe and a piece of wood. This simple project takes a short time to complete, but it can protect your home from major damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 24-inch piece of 1-by-10-inch board with a saw.

    • 2

Place a 2-inch PVC flange in the center of the board, and mark the bolt holes with a pencil.

    • 3

Drill a 1/4-inch hole through each pencil mark.

    • 4

Sand the wood surface with 80-grit sandpaper to remove any splinters.

    • 5

Bolt the flange to the wood surface with 2-inch-long, 1/4-inch-diameter bolts and nuts.

    • 6

Sand the end of a 2-inch PVC pipe with 80-grit sandpaper to prepare it for glue. The length of the pipe depends on how far you need it to reach.

    • 7

Apply a bead of PVC glue into the flange, then insert the sanded end of the pipe. Wipe off any excess PVC glue with a paper towel.

    • 8

Allow the glue to dry for the time recommended on the bottle.
