How to Use a Paint Roller to Apply Asphalt Sealer

Asphalt needs to be sealed every one to three years, depending on your climate. Asphalt sealers are composed of materials including latex, clay and petroleum or coal. This mixture will fill in cracks and protect the asphalt. Sealers are available in a number of colors. When you're using a paint roller to apply sealer, add an extension handle so that you can cover a larger area in a short time.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill any cracks larger than a fourth inch with an asphalt-repair material and a putty knife. Allow the repair material to dry according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

    • 2

Sweep the asphalt to remove any debris, and then spray it down with water. Scrub oily areas of the asphalt with a mild detergent, water and a stiff-bristled brush. Allow the asphalt to dry thoroughly.

    • 3

Open the sealer bucket, using a paint can opener. Place a clean mixing stick into the sealer, and stir until the product is blended. Screw the threaded end of an extension handle to the roller bracket so that you can stand while you are applying the sealer.

    • 4

Starting at one end of the asphalt slab and working your way to the other, lift the can of sealer, and pour out a generous amount of product, which you'll spread with the paint roller.

    • 5

Place the roller into the poured sealer, and push it in a back-and-forth motion, spreading the product evenly over the asphalt. Pour more sealer as needed so that the entire surface has an even amount.
