How to Dispose of Landscaping Rocks

Unwanted landscaping rock has the disadvantage of being heavy and a chore to move. Although piling it near the curb with a big sign marked "Free" may motivate someone else to haul the rocks away for you, there are other options. One of the many benefits of an increased emphasis on recycling and reusing resources is that recycling operations cover a wide range of materials. Certain public and private recycling centers -- and other businesses -- can help you dispose of landscaping rock.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Gather the landscaping rocks for pick-up or to haul away. Load smaller rocks by shovel and larger rocks by hand into a wheelbarrow. Wheel the rocks to the driveway or desired location and shovel or transfer the rocks into sturdy containers. Alternatively, fill the containers part way and use a hand truck to move them.

    • 2

Offer the landscape rock for free to neighbors, a local school, church or charity. Some charities have trucks for pick-up. Mention that the rocks are in containers ready for pick-up.

    • 3

Call businesses that deal in landscaping materials or even junk. If your landscaping rocks are something the business can resell, the company will haul the rocks away for free.

    • 4

Contact municipal or private recycling centers. Many of them will take landscaping rock or gravel. Landscaping rock gets recycled into asphalt for roads. Ask if the center charges a fee for drop-off. Check the days and hours they're open.

    • 5

Test the weight of the containers before loading them into a truck or other vehicle. Distribute the rocks into more containers if needed. Lift with your legs, not your back, to reduce the risk of injury.
