How to Reset a Brick Mailbox

Any structure made of brick can become weakened and break apart as the mortar between the bricks cracks and weakens. After you brick mailbox has fallen victim to weak mortar, you must reset it to restore the mailbox to its original sturdiness. In the future, keep an eye out for loose bricks on the mailbox or cracks in the mortar. You can remove the loose bricks and reset them to avoid having the reset the entire structure later.

  • Hammer
  • Wire brush
  • Hand broom

      Break away the old mortar where you need to reset the bricks, using a cold chisel and hammer. Hold the chisel at an angle so you do not damage the bricks below the old mortar.

      Remove any leftover pieces of mortar stuck to the bricks using a wire brush. Brush away the old mortar with a hand broom. Wipe down the bricks where you removed the mortar with a damp sponge.

      Combine mortar mix with water in a bucket, following the ratio on the mix’s bag, and stir the mixture with a stir stick. Apply a 1/2-inch-thick layer of mortar to the bricks using a trowel, spreading the mortar so it is even and smooth.

      Replace the broken portion of the mailbox, setting the bricks on the fresh mortar. Press the fresh mortar spreading out of the joint with a 3/8-inch pointing tool, smoothing out the mortar joint with the tool.
