Ideas for a Block Wall Top Metal Fence

Block wall fences use concrete blocks or cinder blocks as the main building component. The blocks are strong enough to support the weight of the heavy blocks on top. Combining the block wall with a metal fence top gives your yard a more decorative look, as the metal keeps the wall from looking too bulky or heavy. Use different ideas to add this type of fence to your own home.
  1. Privacy Fencing

    • Privacy fencing turns your yard into a private retreat. Often made from wood or a specially treated type of plastic, the fences are usually around 6 feet tall. A decorative trim placed around the top keeps the fence from looking too sterile. A metal and block fence is an alternative to the traditional privacy fence. The blocks act as the base or foundation for the fence, while the metal creates a decorative look around the type. This style works particularly well on older homes, as it mimics the look of an old-fashioned cast iron fence.

    Garden Fences

    • A combination block wall and metal fence offers a unique way of separating your garden from the rest of your lawn. While the fence will not keep out bugs and infestations, it might keep out some smaller animals that chew through your plants or feed on your vegetables. Before installing the fence, you dig a small trench through the ground underneath, which puts the blocks slightly below the surface of the ground. When mice or rabbits try to reach the garden, the animals encounter the firm blocks. The metal top gives the fence a whimsical look.

    Protective Fencing

    • Protective fencing keeps certain areas of your yard off-limits to others. Consider using the fence and wall combination around a swimming pool, hot tub or other water feature. Stack the blocks several feet high, which keeps smaller children from climbing over the top and gaining access to the inside. The metal top lets in sunlight, keeping the blocks from dominating the area. Keep in mind that cities regulate pool fences and this type of fence might not be legal in your city.

    Retaining Walls

    • A block and metal fence creates a retaining wall on your lawn. Retaining walls have a functional and decorative purpose: keeping soil from shifting in some areas and creating raised gardening beds or landscaping in other yards. The metal running across the top of the retaining wall gives the wall a slightly old-fashioned or modern look, depending on the type of decoration you pick.
