How to Build a Besser Block Bench

A garden bench creates the perfect spot for relaxing, as you enjoy the hard work and effort you put into the surrounding landscape. Before investing in a manufactured bench made from wood or metal, consider making your own from Besser blocks. Besser blocks are essentially concrete cinder blocks with holes on either side that go straight through each block. The blocks act as the base or support of the bench and give the finished piece a slightly rustic look.

Things You'll Need

  • 8 Besser blocks
  • Measuring tape
  • Shovel
  • Gravel
  • Mortar mix
  • Plastic bucket
  • Trowel
  • Wood board, 24-by-18-by-1-inch

Instructions

    • 1

Set one block on the ground with a second behind the first. Measure two foot from the edge of the blocks and place two more blocks. Run a shovel around the edge of the blocks, marking the location on the ground, and remove the blocks.

    • 2

Slide the edge of the shovel under the top layer of grass or plant life and dig down half an inch. Remove any soil, rocks or plants within that area. Cover the spaces with a thin layer of gravel, which offers support and keeps the concrete from sinking into the ground.

    • 3

Combine mortar mix or powdered mortar with water in a plastic bucket, using the ratio specified by the manufacturer. The mortar should have a thick consistency when finished and resemble creamy peanut butter, without any lumps.

    • 4

Turn one of the Besser blocks on its end and apply mortar to the top. Set the block on the gravel and place a second block behind it, creating one of your bench legs. Repeat this step with two more blocks on the other side.

    • 5

Spread a layer of mortar on the top of the blocks. Arrange two more blocks on top of the first and repeat with the remaining two blocks. Apply mortar to the top of each block and arrange a wood board on top. Once the mortar dries, the bench is ready for use.
