Remove any existing material around the pool deck. If there is concrete around the pool, rent a jackhammer to break the concrete into manageable pieces, then remove them. You'll need to remove the existing material to expose the soil underneath, so you can install the pavers.
Rake and level out the soil with a tine rake. Once the soil is level, rent a compactor from a utility rental location and roll over the entire surface. A compactor will smooth and firm the soil so the pavers will sit level after installation.
Spread a 2-inch-thick layer of sand over the soil. Use a tine rake to smooth the sand out, then roll the compactor over it to pack the sand solid.
Lay the pavers onto the sand in the desired pattern. Start laying the pavers in the farthest corner of the deck area and place the pavers into the soil moving left to right. Work your way around the entire deck and use a stone cutter to trim any pavers, if needed.
Spread a thin layer of sand directly over the pavers once installation is complete. After the sand is spread onto the pavers, use a push broom to brush the sand across the deck and fill the joints between each stone or brick. Repeat as necessary until any surface sand is removed.
